TMB CogSci Toolkit Privacy Policy

The TestMyBrain Cognitive Science Toolkit (the “Toolkit”), is a free platform supported by the 501(c)(3) non-profit Many Brains Project (“Many Brains”) and the Laboratory for Brain and Cognitive Health Technology at McLean Hospital. The Toolkit is available for cognitive science researchers and educators who want to include cognitive tests in their research studies or classroom education.  All tests on this website are for research or educational purposes and are not designed to provide health information or clinical diagnoses.Many Brains is committed to protecting your privacy.  This privacy policy (“Policy”) is intended to describe the information collected from users of the Toolkit (“User” or “you”) and what is done with it.

The information we collect

The Toolkit does not collect any types of information from Users that are considered personally identifiable information, with the exception that Users who request access to the raw data stored in the Toolkit will be asked to provide name and email address in order to receive a username granting such access.  Otherwise, the Toolkit will not ask Users to provide name, contact information, address, etc.  In particular, participants who take tests will not be asked to provide any identifying information to the Toolkit.  In no case will the Toolkit ask for personal health information. The Toolkit also collects response data from any cognitive test completed by test participants in the Toolkit.  All such data will be deidentified and stored on Many Brains’ secure databases, together with simple demographic information.  

The information we collect automatically

The Toolkit site may collect certain information automatically, such as your Internet protocol (IP) address, device and advertising identifiers, browser type, operating system, Internet service provider, pages that you visit before and after using the site, the date and time of your visit, information about the links you click, the pages you view, the general manner in which you navigate the site, and other standard server log information.  It may also collect certain location information, such as your computer’s IP address, your mobile device’s GPS signal, or information about nearby WiFi access points and cell towers.  Many Brains and third parties that provide content or functionality on our site, may use cookies, pixel tags, Local Shared Objects, and similar technologies to automatically collect this information.  We may also collect technical data to address and fix technical problems and improve the site, including the memory state of your device when a system or app crash occurs while using our site.  By using the Toolkit, you consent to the collection of this technical data.

How we use information collected

Many Brains will use the name and email address you provide only to generate a username and password to grant you access to the raw data section of the Toolkit. We will use the participant test response data to store and make available to researchers and educators and others only with your approval. As described below, no such data will be shared without your express consent.  We will use the technical information collected to manage and improve functionality of the site. We use cookies, Local Shared Objects, and similar technologies for technical reasons to enable the efficient operation of the site, to enhance the ease of use of the site, and to gather statistics on how you use the site.  By using the sites, you consent to our use of cookies and similar technologies.  You may opt out of cookies and similar technologies, but doing so may cause certain functionalities on the site not to work.

Choosing to share your Results ID(s)

Test participant Users may plan to share cognitive test data with another person.  For example, you might choose to share your data with a teacher, professor, or a researcher who directed you to the Toolkit.  We will provide you with an anonymous Results ID or set of Results IDs that will allow you to easily share your data, if you choose.  Whoever has your Results ID(s) can access your performance data from our cognitive tests - this includes the responses you gave for each question within a test, whether you were correct or incorrect, and how quickly you responded.  Please keep your Results IDs in a secure location and only share them with people that you trust, as you will be providing them with access to your cognitive test data.  

Will we otherwise share the information collected?

Many Brains will never sell or distribute your personal information.  We may share your information with third-party vendors and service-providers that help us with specialized services, including analytics, marketing, performance monitoring, hosting, and data processing, or as legally required, such as to respond to subpoenas, court orders, etc. 

Research study questions directed to the researcher who referred you to the Toolkit

If you are a participant completing tests as part of a research study, you should have received study information from the researcher who directed you to our platform. The study information should include information about safeguards that protect you as a research participant (if applicable), informed consent, general data privacy considerations, and how your results will be used by the researcher.  Any questions you have must be directed to the researcher or educator who sent you to our platform.  Please remember, no one other than Many Brains will have access to your cognitive test data unless you share your Results IDs with them. 

How long will we keep your personal information?

We will retain your personal information for as long as is necessary to fulfill the purpose for which we obtained it and any other permitted purposes, and in compliance with our data retention policies.

How do we protect information?

Many Brains uses reasonable measures to help protect information from loss, theft, misuse and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration and destruction, though no data storage or transmission system is perfectly secure.

Do we collect information from children? 

Many Brains does not knowingly collect any personal information from children under the age of 13 without parental consent.  If we learn that a child under the age of 13 has provided us with personal information, we will delete it in accordance with applicable law.

Privacy Policy changes

Many Brains may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we update the Policy, we will update the “Effective Date” above.
